Work starts on new airport car park facilities

Work is underway to expand car parking facilities at Mackay’s busy airport.

The $2 million project will eventually add an additional 165 spaces to the new short and long-term pay-parking precincts and an extra 75 bays to the undercover security car park. The car rental return area will be increased by 80 spaces.

Mackay’s Civdec Constructions Pty Ltd will carry out the civil works and began earth moving operations earlier this week. The ground work is expected to take four months to complete.

Mackay Airport general manager Trevor Heard said the Mackay Port Authority was battling to keep pace with calls for increased parking facilities.

"We are continuing to experience phenomenal growth with 624 500 people passing through the airport in 2005," he said.

"On Christmas Day we had a record, 828 cars parked at the airport and over the next 12 months things are only going to get busier."

Mr Heard appealed to airport visitors to be patient as development stages required temporary relocation of parking and changes to traffic flow during the construction period.

The new parking facilities are expected to officially come on line in October.
