Mackay’s soccer and hockey associations are examining a proposal that could give more than 3000 players a new home.
The Mackay Port Authority has released a discussion paper outlining plans to relocate the two sports from Barbour Park to a modern new complex off Milton Street.
Barbour Park is owned by the State Government.
The MPA – owner of Mackay Airport -- wants to transform the Barbour Park sports fields into a runway safety zone.
Inspecting the Barbour Park sporting fields relocation discussion paper are (from left) Mackay Hockey Association secretary Val McCubben, Mackay Port Authority chairman John Taylor and president of the Mackay Junior Soccer Association Mauro Giannangelo.
The relocation concept already has attracted the support of Mackay Junior Soccer Association president Mauro Giannangelo.
“It an exciting proposal and I’m looking forward to working with the MPA, hockey and other groups to further develop this project,” he said.
“We have recognised for some time the limitations of Barbour Park. This proposal will give our sport an opportunity to expand and prosper.
“It’s early days yet, but we want to know more.”
Mr Giannangelo said the association’s executive would closely examine the relocation proposal over the new few weeks and make submissions.
He said the soccer association looked forward to securing a seat on the community consultative committee that would help drive the project.
President of the Mackay Hockey Association Lawry Denney said the executive was currently examining the proposal.
“It’s a very interesting proposal and I’m pleased the hockey association has been approached over the relocation project,” he said.
“I see our overall involvement being driven by two considerations.
“Firstly, full support and consultation throughout the entire hockey community and secondly, the financial requirements of the project and our capacity to attract funding assistance.
Mr Denney said the hockey association would need to examine the relocation document in detail before making further comment. |
