New public bays open at Mackay Airport

Posted on Thursday, 11 November 2004 @ 1:06:27 PM

An additional 44 bays in the new $2.3 million airport car park expansion program are now open to the public.

More public spaces will come on line next month with the completion of the 67-bay undercover security car park.

The security car park is expected to be open on December 13.

Mackay Port Authority chairman John Taylor said the MPA Board would consider further plans to progress onto stage two of the car park redevelopment program in the New Year.

“I’m certain these new facilities will be welcomed by the community,” he said.

“The MPA is mindful that people on occasions are having trouble finding parking spaces.

“The airport is experiencing unprecedented growth – with more than 575 000 passengers expected to pass through the airport terminal this financial year.

“It is important that our parking facilities keep pace with this growth.”

An additional 160 car parking bays opened earlier this year – and by Christmas another 130 security and public parking bays would be available.

Airport general manager Trevor Heard said parking fees for the new undercover security car park would start at $15 a day. The fee would be discounted for extended stays. After the first week motorists would pay a flat $10 a day.

The MPA was committed to providing the community with free short stay unsecured parking at the airport.
