Motorists asked to obey airport parking laws

Posted on Tuesday, 31 January 2006 @ 6:43:52 PM

The Mackay Port Authority is appealing to motorists to only park in designated areas at the city’s busy airport.

Acting airport operations manager Colin Wilson said some visitors were embarking on the dangerous practice of illegally parking on grass verges and garden beds.

Mackay Airport groundsman Shane Hokins attempts to manoeuvre a ride-on mower around an illegally parked car at the airport.

A few frustrated motorists - keen to secure a park close to the main terminal - had even left their cars on the roadway within the parking precinct in recent weeks.

"Illegally parked cars not only pose a problem in regard to mowing and general maintenance but can also prove to be a safety risk," he said.

"Safety is paramount and we need the co-operation of everyone. We have the ability to impose parking fines and tow cars. We would much rather people do the right thing and park in designated areas."

Mr Wilson said a gravelled overflow car park was now on line to give people another parking option while work was being carried out on the redevelopment of the main parking precinct and the introduction of paid parking.

More than $2 million was being spent on upgrading parking facilities at the airport.

Eventually, parking would be segregated into short, long term and undercover security parking areas, providing an additional 240 bays. Work was expected to be completed by October.

Mr Wilson also urged motorists to obey speed limits within the airport road network.
