Mr Heard -- the driving force behind Mackay Airport being crowned the nation’s best Regional Airport last year – was presented with another trophy to add to the port authority’s growing list of community and industry achievements.

Trevor received the award for his "Outstanding Contribution by an individual to Tourism". The award was sponsored by Mackay Tourism and presented by general manager Mr David Phillips.

Mr Heard said he was proud to receive the award.

"It’s very pleasing to be recognized in the community, but like all these awards it all boils down to team work and the support I have received from the MPA Board of Directors and the CEO down to my family and workmates," he said.

Mr Heard singled out airport operations coordinator Ray Waters for special mention. "Tourism is very close to my heart," he said.

"In Mackay the sugar cane is up and down, you have mining over the years up and down and the place really needs to be able to diversify more and tourism is the answer to that."

Mr Heard is confident tourism is heading in the right direction in the region.

"It just needs more people to put their hands in their pockets and support groups like Mackay Tourism," he said.

"This will enable them to do more destinational marketing so the awareness of Mackay as a destination reaches the lucrative markets in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and other capital cities."
