The distraught parents of missing Sunshine Coast school boy Daniel Morcombe are hoping Queensland airport operators will embrace a poster campaign launched at Mackay Airport today.
Mackay Port Authority has joined forces with the Queensland Police Service and the Morcombe family in seeking information that could shed new light on Daniel’s disappearance.
Bruce and Denise Morcombe were in Mackay this morning to launch the MPA initiative. It involves information and reward posters being displayed at Queensland’s two Government-owned airports in Mackay and Cairns. More than four million passengers are expected to pass through the two airports this financial year.
Daniel’s father Bruce Morcombe is appealing to airport operators throughout Queensland and inter-State to take up the challenge and join the campaign.
“It’s fantastic the Mackay Port Authority and the Cairns Port Authority have joined the fight,” he said. ”Our family appreciates this support and hopes other airports might follow this initiative in the lead up to the busy Christmas school holidays.
“We hope that this continual wave of public pressure brings forward some courageous person who can provide information or a name that solves this horror of a crime.”
Thirteen-year-old Daniel Morcombe was last seen waiting at a bus stop on the Nambour-Connection Road under the Kiel Mountain Road overpass, just north of the “Big Pineapple” on the Sunshine Coast on December 7 last year.
Police fear the boy has been abducted and murdered.
Mackay Port Authority chairman John Taylor said communities throughout Queensland, including Mackay, have been deeply touched by the grief and mystery surrounding Daniel’s disappearance.
“You see the family suffering -- you just feel so helpless,” Mr Taylor said. “The poster campaign is the community’s way of showing support for the Morcombes and the on-going police investigation.
“This financial year almost 600 000 passengers will pass through the Mackay Airport terminal – in Cairns that figure will top 3.5 million. Southern tourists use Mackay Airport as the gateway to the Whitsundays. Seeing Daniel’s face on a poster could jog someone’s memory or challenge someone’s conscience. It’s a long shot but sometimes the smallest piece of information can lead to a major break through.”
The Queensland Government has offered a record $250 000 reward for information into Daniel’s disappearance. The reward could also lead to a possible indemnity from prosecution.
Anyone with any information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1 800 333 000.
