New passenger record for Mackay Airport

Mackay Airport is continuing to rewrite the record books with more than 16 000 passengers passing through the terminal last week.
The throughput of 16 259 people has the airport on target to process a record 700 000 passengers this year. The previous weekly record of 15 787 was set a fortnight ago.
Mackay Airport general manager Trevor Heard and Mackay Tourism general manager David Phillips celebrate Mackay's bumper weekly passenger record.
Mackay Airport general manager Trevor Heard said the bumper week had coincided with the Queensland and southern school holidays.
“In fact September has been enormous with 65 980 people flying in and out of Mackay,” Mr Heard said. It’s been a struggle to get a seat on some flights.
“September and October are traditionally our busiest months – but there’s still a chance that this record could fall in the lead up to Christmas as the airlines increase capacity with bigger aircraft and lower fares.
“The Mackay Port Authority is also doing its bit by offering the airlines special incentives and rebates in a bid to keep fares at affordable prices for the whole community.”
“We have been actively involved in destination marketing campaigns with the airlines and tourism groups to entice people looking for short break holidays to Mackay.”
Mr Heard said the MPA was having ongoing talks with the major carriers in an effort to secure more services and bigger aircraft.
“We are experiencing unprecedented growth – but we are mindful that facilities and services must keep pace with this growth spurt,” he said.
“Over the past 12 months the MPA has spent more than $5.5 million expanding the security departure lounge and car parking facilities at the airport.
“Paid car parking that comes in later this month will help underwrite additional expansion plans and also ensure security and anti-terror measures continue to be improved.”
