Tiger eyes Mackay

Posted on 19 Mar 2007 by mackayports

Singapore based Tiger Airways could be jetting into Mackay as early as next year following positive talks with Mackay Airport representatives in Sydney last week.

Tiger Airways boss Tony Davis invited Mackay Airport general manager Trevor Heard and Mackay Port Authority Acting chief executive officer Marilyn Symes to the Harbour City to open talks on a possible mid-day service to Mackay.

The Mackay Port Authority (MPA) owns and operates the airport and seaport in Mackay.

Mr Heard said the hour long meeting gave the MPA an opportunity to exchange information and to learn more about the Tiger "discount fare model" that has gained tremendous community support in Perth and Darwin.

"Our discussions were 'commercial in confidence' in nature, so I can't say too much - only to suggest they were positive and have opened the door for ongoing talks," he said.

It's interesting to note that Tiger will fly into Perth from Singapore next week and have released 1.5 million seats at S$1.99, plus taxes. I guess we could expect similar discounts if Tiger elects to service Mackay."

Mr Heard expects Tiger to announce the "hub" for its Australian operations next month. Tiger Airways Australia is currently seeking an Air Operator’s Certificate from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority that will enable the budget priced airline to fly into domestic ports.
"Things are looking promising and Tony Davis was impressed with the level of support flowing from the Mackay community," he said.
