Blower sparks airport evacuation

Posted on 03 Apr 2007 by mackayports

Petrol exhaust fumes from a dust blower sparked the evacuation of the main passenger terminal at Mackay’s busy airport this morning.

More than 200 visitors, passengers and airport staff cleared the building after exhaust emissions activated a fire alarm in the baggage conveyor tunnel about 8 a.m.

Terminal services manager Gary Riches said the airport's evacuation plan was activated and people cleared the terminal building in an orderly manner.

Mr Riches said airport firefighters were quickly on the scene and isolated the alarm to the conveyor tunnel.

A cleaner had been using a petrol-driven dust blower in the tunnel. Exhaust emissions activated sensitive smoke monitoring equipment.

The terminal was reopened at 8.20 a.m.
