MPA and Virgin support World’s Greatest Shave

Gina Jam hairdressers Jade Hawkins, Alainie Chapman and Rebecca Ware get to work on Daily Mercury journalist Jim Mulcair, Channel 7 news editor Bianca Stone and Sea FM morning presenter Chris North.

Virgin Blue's contribution to the World’s Greatest Shave has landed the Leukaemia Foundation more $2000.

Queensland's budget-price airline raised the bulk of the money on yesterday's inaugural direct flight from Sydney to Mackay - as passengers dug deep to support the foundation's annual three-day appeal that winds up on Saturday.

Up for grabs was a return flight to Mackay with accommodation courtesy of the Clarion Hotel Mackay Marina.

Local media personalities also sprung into the spirit of things with Daily Mercury scribe Jim Mulcair and Sea FM morning announcer Chris North parting company with their lovely locks for the charity. Seven News editor Bianca Stone found a colour more to her liking.

The Mackay Port Authority's offer of $5 for every passenger who coloured their hair fell a little short of the mark.

Mackay Airport general manager Trevor Heard said people were more than happy to give – but were a little colour-shy when the girls from Gina Jam produced the spray cans.

Mr Heard said the Mackay Port Authority would contribute $500 to the appeal - that’s on top of more than $240 raised by airport staff that coloured their hair.
Virgin Blue will fly direct to Sydney four times a week - Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
