Police to crackdown on speeding motorists

Posted on 11 May 2006 by mackayports Mackay Airport operations manager Ray Waters monitors cars entering the main entrance road to the airport

Low-flying motorists will soon face a bumpy landing at Mackay Airport.

Police are starting radar patrols within the airport precinct in an effort to put a brake on lead-footed drivers.

Mackay Airport operations manager Ray Waters said some motorists had been "clocked" at up to 90 km/h on the airport’s 40 km/h entrance road.

We have also had a number of close calls involving cars and pedestrians at the front of the main airport terminal, he said.

Motorists are simply driving too fast for such a busy area - fortunately no-one has been killed or seriously injured.

People need to understand that the speed limit in front of the terminal is 20 km/h.

Mr Waters said erratic drivers had forced the Mackay Port Authority to remove the speed bump on the approach to the roundabout on the main entrance road.

Motorists were swerving into oncoming traffic to avoid driving over the speed bump, he said.

MPA engineers were of the opinion that it was safer to remove the bump.
