Asphalt seal paves the way for car park

The expansion of car parking facilities at Mackay Airport remains on target with the final asphalt seal being completed this week.

The Mackay Port Authority expects to open the new $3 million paid car parking precinct by late September.

The redevelopment project aims at easing parking congestion as passenger numbers continue to soar. A record 656 000 travellers passed through the Mackay terminal last financial year.

MPA projects manager Kevin Ryan said the car park redevelopment would lift parking facilities at the airport to more than 600 bays - including an additional 184 bays in the new short term and long term parking areas and an extra 73 spaces coming on line in the undercover security car park.

Mr Ryan said the final asphalt seal had paved the way for line marking to begin and the installation of the new car parking operating system.

Overall, the project is progressing well despite delays linked to unseasonal rain, he said.

Mr Ryan said construction work had also started this week on the expansion of the undercover security car park.

This will involve constructing the frame work and roofing - eventually lifting parking capacity to more than 140 bays, he said.

Airport general manager Trevor Heard said the redevelopment of the car park would also impact on the flow of traffic past the front of the main terminal affecting designated passenger set down areas; bus, taxi and loading zones.

We are working to keep disruptions to a minimum. Our goal is to build Mackay a better airport, he said.
