Tim Mulherin invites Tiger to Mackay

Member for Mackay Tim Mulherin has officially invited Tiger Airways CEO Tony Davis to visit Mackay to consider the city as a destination for regional flights.

Mr Davis announced earlier this month that the Singapore-based airline was keen to enter the Australian domestic market - and would look at new routes to regional and secondary airports.

Tiger Airways currently flies from Singapore to six cities in Thailand, two in Vietnam, four in China and to Indonesia, the Philippines and Darwin. The low-cost carrier is due to start a four-weekly service between Singapore and Perth in March.

Mr Mulherin said it would be a significant boost for the region to attract Tiger Airways services to Mackay.

"Tiger offers a low cost airfare to passengers that I believe would prove popular in Mackay," he said.

"I have contacted representatives from Tiger Airways with an invitation to visit the region and see first-hand what we have to offer.

"With the Whitsunday islands on our doorstep there is a real opening for a noon service aimed at tourists and leisure passengers."

Mr Mulherin said the next step was to receive a response from Tiger Airways gauging their interest in the region.

"This is the first contact from Mackay with Tiger and I am hopeful it will produce a positive response," he said.

Mr Mulherin made the initial contact on behalf of the community and the Mackay Port Authority.
