MPA lowers covered parking fees

The Mackay Port Authority is making car parking cheaper at the city’s busy Airport.

A six-monthly review of the new paid parking system has resulted in the MPA Board reducing covered parking fees from $18 for the first day to a flat fee of $15 a day.

Previously, covered parking was charged on a sliding scale of $18 for the first day, falling a dollar a day to the fifth day which was charged at $14.

Mackay Airport business development manager Gary Riches said the new charges would provide motorists with a $6 saving on a typical three day stay.

"We have been tracking usage over the past six months and have identified that the covered parking station is being under utilised," Mr Riches said.

" The long term car park (charged at a flat fee of $12/day) has been very popular - in fact we have had instances where we have had to spill cars onto a gravelled overflow area."

Mr Riches said it was hoped that bringing the cost of the two parking options closer together would encourage more people to use the covered parking precinct.

The new parking fees were introduced today (Friday May 18).

Meantime, growth is continuing on an upward trend with more than 750 000 passengers expected to pass through the Mackay terminal this year.
