Mackay Port Authority Timber Theft Angers Workers Article first published on Friday, 5 September 2003 @ 1:00:57 PM |
The Mackay Port Authority is appealing to the community for additional information into the theft of almost a tonne of timber, earmarked for the Slade Point Wetlands Boardwalk project.

The timber -- to be used in the final stage of the project -- was stolen from a work site off Keeleys Road on Tuesday night.
The theft has angered and disappointed the hard working, dedicated group of Indigenous people, who have put their heart and soul into building the 600 metre cultural heritage trail through the MPA protected wetlands.
A total of 12 unemployed people have been working on the project under the State Government’s Breaking the Unemployment Cycle Initiative over the past four months.
The matter has now been reported to police. Tyre tracks have been inspected at the scene and could play a major role in the investigation.
MPA Manager of Projects and Environment, Scott Keane, has appealed to the people or person responsible to return the timber.
"New information is coming to hand and eventually these people will be caught," he said. ”I think it would be better for all concerned if the wood is returned.”
Project worker, Laurie Mooney, said the theft of the timber had angered his follow workers.
"It’s very disappointing." Mr Mooney said. "This project was coming along nicely."
"Everyone has taken a personal interest in this project that will eventually benefit the whole community."
Meantime, Mr Keane said the theft would cause some delays, but the MPA remained confident the official opening would still go ahead on September 19.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Mackay Police on 49683500 or MPA Communications Manager Colin Wilson on 49570258 or 0417 570258.
