Christmas cards from the Mackay Port Authority will be as rare as snow this festive season.

The MPA has elected not to send Christmas cards but will make a donation to charity this year.

The authority today handed a cheque for $500 to the St Vincent de Paul Society – and in doing so issued a similar challenge to other local businesses to follow suit.

“It generally costs us about $500 to purchase and post Christmas cards to our customers and supporters,” MPA chairman John Taylor said.

“The Board thought it would be nice to donate this money to a charity, such as St Vincent de Paul.

“This money will hopefully spread a little bit more Christmas cheer in the Mackay community and I hope it substitutes as a Merry Christmas ‘wish’ to our customers and supporters from the MPA.”

St Vincent de Paul Society regional president, Mr Ray Egan said the money would be channelled into the society’s Christmas appeal and be used to provide Christmas hampers and toys for the needy in the Mackay district.

“This money is very much appreciated and a kind gesture by the Mackay Port Authority,” he said.

Mr Taylor said the MPA would make a similar donation to the Salvation Army next year.
