More than 2000 people attended the CQ Rescue Helicopter open day on Saturday, April 16.
The Mackay Port Authority supported the day by providing "air-side" security, parking supervision and the connection of power to the field site.
The MPA also staged a display in the CQ Rescue hangar, outlining the authority’s on-going support to the lifesaving rescue organisation.
Since the service’s inception, MPA staff has donated more than $10 000 through weekly payroll deductions. CQ Rescue benefits from the generosity of visitors to Mackay Airport, via the barra pond wishing well. Money fished out of the pond is shared by CQ Rescue and the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
A decision by the MPA Board to waive helicopter landing fees have proven to be an extra bonus.
As part of the open day display, The Mackay Port Authority staged a free “raffle” of MPA merchandise.
More than 300 entries were received and the lucky winners were Murray Todd of Mackay, Emily Barnett of Mackay and Shaun Smith of Marian.
The MPA display also carried a banner encouraging the community to support the search for missing Sunshine Coast schoolboy Daniel Morcombe.
