Students enjoy water walk
Posted on Friday, 3 December 2004 @ 3:17:22 PM

The Mackay Port Authority’s Kommo Toera Trail is about to become an important environmental learning tool for local schools.

Year Seven students from St Francis Xavier School this week became the first Mackay students to experience the wonders of the “water walk” that winds through the MPA’s melaleuca conservation forest.

Environmental manager Scott Keane said a detailed map and brochure had been produced to help people negotiate the 700 metre trail through the wetlands of the port conservation area.

“The brochure contains a map outlining significant points of interest. It’s designed to be informative and educational,” he said.

The trail boasts an abundance of natural wildlife and flora – ranging from weeping paperbark and melaleuca trees to brolgas and egrets.

Mr Keane said the trail was a pathway for all seasons.

“At the moment the trail is dry, but rain will transform the area into a haven for a variety of water birds and plants, such as lilies and native shrubs,” he said.

St Francis Xavier teacher Kathy Wessel said more than 50 Year Seven students enjoyed the water walk adventure.

“The children enjoyed the bird hides and the beauty of the natural forest,” Mrs Wessel said. “It was a great experience.”
