Work starts on new fish facility

Posted on 18 Apr 2006 by mackayports Seaport general manager Scott Keane discusses the new fish processing facility with Member for Dawson De-Anne Kelly and Peter Hansen from Mackay Marina

Work is underway on the construction of a multi-million dollar fish handling facility at the Mackay Marina.

The first stage of the new commercial fishing precinct involves the reclamation and rock fill of about 8000 square metres of land, south of the molasses terminal at Mackay Harbour.

Contractor Caruana Drilling and Earthmoving has started repositioning existing armour rock and carting smaller rock material from the Mackay Port Authority’s Mt Bassett quarry.

Mackay seaport general manager Scott Keane said about 36 000 cubic metres of rock would be extracted from the quarry and used in the project. The land would eventually become strategic port land.

Mr Keane said the site preparation works were expected to take about six weeks to complete.

The initial stage being undertaken for the Mackay Port Authority involves reclamation of part of the site above the shallow-sloping southern face of the original southern harbour breakwater, now acting as the northern wall of the small craft harbour,he said.

The new commercial fishing precinct will be controlled by the Port Binnli group.

Stage One will cost $750 000 and is being funded jointly by the Mackay Port Authority and Port Binnli.
