Whales pay a visit to area

Up to eight humpack whales, some with calves, paid a brief visit to Mackay Harbour this morning.
The whales were spotted frolicking in the warm shallow water between the Northern Breakwall and Slade Islet about 10 a.m. today.
The “tourists” put on a rare display much to the delight of spectators who converged at the end of the Southern Breakwater for a ringside seat of the action.
The whales have been on their annual migration north to breed and calve in the sheltered waters of the Whitsundays. They were last seen heading south.
