MPA assists in barge clean up

Maritime Queensland has launched an investigation into an incident in which a crane boom crashed onto a luxury catamaran at Mackay Marina on Saturday morning.
 
The pile driver and crane barge is inserting and replacing piles for a new section at the marina.

The marina is owned and operated by Port Binnli and the barge is operated by The Jetty Specialists.

Mackay Port Authority seaport general manager Scott Keane said MPA workers were called in to help authorities. They used a dredge barge to help release the stricken catamaran.

MPA workers also assisted in positioning floating booms to prevent the spread of fuel from the up-turned crane barge.

Salvage crews have managed to partially right the barge and further attempts using a large crane are expected to be made today to recover the barge.

Mr Keane said the southern breakwater would remain closed to traffic indefinitely until the clean up was completed.

"For safety reasons, the breakwater will be closed to all traffic and pedestrians while heavy equipment is operating," he said.
