Mackay Seaport News

The Port of Mackay is a busy seaport, situated about 850 kilometres, north of Brisbane. The port relies heavily on the export of raw sugar. Four storage sheds can house 730 000 tonnes of raw sugar – and until only recently (2003) was the largest raw sugar storage facility in the world. Mackay also boasts the only export terminal in the southern hemisphere capable of handling food-grade bulk refined sugar. The terminal has a storage capacity of 45 000 tonne. The refined sugar is processed at nearby Racecourse Sugar Mill and is exported through Mackay to interstate and international markets. Other exports also include grain, meat, molasses, industrial alcohol and scrap metal. Fuel for agriculture and the coal mining industry is now the dominant import at Mackay. This growth is expected to continue as more coal mines come online.

Friday, 27 January 2006 @ 11:01:36 AM

A 6000 tonne dragline frame unloaded at Mackay Harbour this week is making its way to Xstrata's Rolleston Coal Mine in the Bowen Basin.

The dragline has been shipped from Canada.

Local company G and S Engineering is fabricating the base frame of the giant machine. The dragline "foot" - weighing 140 tonnes - was the largest single piece of equipment to be lifted off the Da Qiang at Mackay Harbour this week.

The equipment is being moved by road and will be reassembled on-site. The dragline is expected to be operational by April next year.

Planning and Environment Manager comes on board
Tuesday, 17 January 2006 @ 2:16:39 PM

A new planning and environment manager has come on board at the Mackay Port Authority.

But Bill Boylson is no stranger to Mackay. He has spent the past 12 months with the Canegrowers organisation working on a pilot project examining Environmental Management Systems.

Seaport general manager Scott Keane (front) and planning and environment manager Bill Boylson conduct water quality tests at Mackay harbour.

Mr Boylson holds a Masters Degree in Environmental Management (sustainable development) and replaces Scott Keane who has been appointed to the senior role of general manager Seaport.

Mr Boylson is looking forward to new challenges at the MPA.

"It’s a great opportunity to stay in the region and to work for an organisation that’s committed to sustainable development," he said.

"I also will be in a position to help our tenants at the sea and air ports better manage their own operations with the view of providing better outcomes for their businesses and the environment."

Mr Boylson is a keen rugby player and has played representative union for Mackay.

Bill and fiancé Sorkunde Gogenola will travel to Spain to be married in April.

"We love Mackay and the lifestyle and we’re looking forward to making Mackay home," he said.
