Police to increase park patrols
Posted on Wednesday, 22 December 2004 @ 9:25:25 AM

Mackay police are increasing patrols of old Mulherin Park at Mackay Harbour after vandals attacked playground equipment for the second time in less than a week.

Vandals returned to the park at the weekend for a second ‘bite’ at popular cartoon character Snoopy.

Snoop’s right paw was souvenired last Thursday night. The Mackay Port Authority has offered a $100 reward for the return of the limb.

MPA communications manager Colin Wilson said vandals struck again at the weekend targeting another limb that had been repaired by workers late last week.

The incident has been reported to police.

Senior Sergeant Noel Lang said police would increase patrols of the area in light of the most recent attack.

“We have a couple of areas where vandals have been active in recent weeks – Old Mulherin Park is one and we will be boosting patrols in a bid to curb this senseless vandalism,” he said.

Meantime, Mr Wilson said the MPA would encourage police to lay charges against anyone found vandalizing the park or MPA property.

“The Mackay community has strong ties with the park – it’s considered a local asset. It’s great to see families utilizing the facilities – whether it’s enjoying a barbecue or a picnic,” he said.

“Children just love the cartoon characters in the park. It’s a shame that a minority group believes it has the right to destroy and damage property the community enjoys.

“If someone is apprehended over these matters, we will have no hesitation in urging police to lay charges and put these people before the court.”

Anyone with information concerning vandalism at old Mulherin Park is asked to contact Mackay police on 49 683444.
