The Mackay Port Authority owns and operates the sea and air ports in Mackay,
Queensland, Australia. Mackay is situated at the “gateway” to the tourist
Mecca of the Whitsundays and is the major servicing centre for the mineral
rich Bowen Basin. The MPA is a statutory model Government owned corporation.
The Port of Mackay is a multi-commodity seaport, situated about 850
kilometres, north of Brisbane. The port relies heavily on the export
of raw and refined sugar. Fuel for agriculture and the coal mining industry
is now the dominant import.
Mackay Airport was judged the best regional airport in Australia in
2002. Passenger growth is expected to top 500 000 in the 2004-05 financial
year. Mackay is serviced by the major airlines with direct and connecting
flights to major capital and regional cities.
