New 'Early Bird' service lifts off in Mackay
Posted on Friday, 26 November 2004 @ 8:25:59 AM

Virgin Blue’s new 6.10 service jetted into Brisbane this morning with only 17 spare seats.

Mackay Port Authority chief executive officer Greg Mann said the MPA and Virgin were delighted by the public response.

The Virgin service replaces the 6 a.m. Qantas flight that fell by the way side with the introduction of the airline’s new budget carrier Jetstar.

“We are very happy with the loading and if this morning is any indication the service will be an outstanding success,” Mr Mann said.

Mackay Mayor Julie Boyd was one of 127 passengers, who touched down in Brisbane at 730 this morning.

The 610 service was made possible thanks to a $75 000 marketing package provided by the MPA, Mackay City Council and the chamber of commerce.

Mr Mann said this morning’s flight contained a good mix of business and leisure passengers.

“The business community has been crying out for the reintroduction of the early bird service,” he said.

“It allows people to do business in Brisbane in one day without having to incur the additional expense of overnight accommodation.”

Mr Mann hoped the community would continue to support the service.
