Mr Heard outlined the Mackay Port Authority’s commitment to tourism through the city’s award winning airport.

Mr Heard said the MPA was committed to fostering development, investment and growth in the Mackay region.

“The MPA has spent more than 17 million dollars to improve services and facilities at Mackay Airport,” he said.

“Marketing, airline rebates, reduction in terminal charges and landing fee caps and price freezes represents a commitment of $2.3 million dollars between 2001 and 2004.

“This year we have earmarked $1.11 million that includes a cash injection of $90 000 to Mackay Tourism Limited, and an estimated $870 000 in airline rebates.

“All up this presents a commitment of $20.7 million from 2001/02.”

Mr Heard also outlined future initiatives such as plans to increase car parking facilities, direct flight from New Zealand, co-operative marketing focusing on the fly-drive market and a proposal to extend the city’s runway.

He said the MPA was also planning to commit and additional $120 000 in the coming months concentrating on the in-bound holiday markets from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.

“Our focus will be on short break holidays,” Mr Heard said.
